A page Spark advance was recently added. This is a cut and paste of a widely circulated 'article' that is all over the 'net. As it stands now this page does not have a category specified, so is in limbo. Any suggestions as to what to do w/it?--Cobalt327 18:25, 22 June 2012 (MDT)

:I'm leaving it w/o a category. This can be changed if anyone wants.--Cobalt327 05:49, 25 June 2012 (MDT)

::My view is that we should delete these. We don't allow copypasta, unless we can prove that its copyright status is such that we can reproduce it here, or unless the copied text is so small (de minimis) that it doesn't matter.--Jon 11:10, 25 June 2012 (MDT)

Blocking of IPs
Jon... we seem to have a major spam bot attack Crosley 06:23, 4 May 2011 (MDT)
+
You may have noticed a large number of recently blocked IPs. I'm sure you are aware that if the Recent changes are viewed using the enhanced recent changes (in 'my preferences'/Recent changes), the list of blocked IPs is compacted into an expandable tab so it doesn't take up a large amount of space. These IPs were found on various article's discussion pages (mainly, some have also been found in the history of the actual article page). The IPs belonged to spammers that had their content removed, but the IPs were not blocked by a previous admin. In some cases this resulted in numerous reposted spam. Because these occurred some time ago, this may be closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, but my thoughts were if I'm there anyway I would block them. Is this unnecessary?--Cobalt327 22:49, 30 June 2012 (MDT)
:Thanks, looking into this. --Jon 09:28, 4 May 2011 (MDT)

:I wasn't even aware of that option! Maybe it was added with the software upgrade. Agreed on blocking those IPs.--Jon 23:57, 30 June 2012 (MDT)
::also.... I now see how to locate this talk page for you.  Link was right in front of me... it is rough getting worn out , old and being a tech idiot
+
::Kinda off topic, but I remember asking some time ago about having an expanded view of the Recent changes; I couldn't get the page to respond to changing the options at the top of the page. I found that by going to 'my preferences'/Watchlist I could select 7 days/1000 changes.--Cobalt327 18:58, 1 July 2012 (MDT)
:::No problem, that's an easy one to miss. A user page is for info about the user ("Hi, I'm Jon...", etc.), and the user "Talk" page is for discussions with the user. It's definitely very different from a discussion forum. --Jon 10:10, 5 May 2011 (MDT)

The text and related images have been deleted and Neighbor's user accounts blocked at the request of Neighbors. The text and images were originally located on the Transmission holding fixtures page and had been removed from there and placed on the discussion page of that article until clarification was presented.

Jon,  I have been watching the "who's online page. I see user names that were banned some weeks back. I guess the spam bots can visit , but no posting. Crosley 22:34, 8 August 2011 (MDT)

:That's fine. IANAL, but Neighbors's portrayal of copyright law may be incomplete. The wiki is clear, via the text beneath the posting box: "If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then do not submit it here. You are also promising us that you wrote this yourself, or copied it from a public domain or similar free resource. Do not submit copyrighted work without permission!". AFAIK, copyright law has limited recognition of "gimme-backsies". Once you release something into the public domain, or the Creative Commons license that we use, (as long as you are legally entitled to license it accordingly in the first place!), it's very difficult to retract (though not technically impossible, see Golan v. Holder). Not really an issue in this case, but, in the future, if you come across a user who is demanding a significant deletion, you likely don't need to comply, especially as their contributions may be intermingled with the contributions of other editors, and too difficult to disentangle. In some situations, you may encounter users who, simply out of spite, demand that all of their contributions be deleted. Per their use of the wiki, they will most likely have previously abandoned the right to make that demand.--Jon 21:59, 17 September 2012 (MDT)

::Thanks for the clarification, Jon. I felt in this particular case that the content that was requested to be removed could be deleted w/o causing any problems w/the continuity of the article as a whole, since it had already been removed from the article itself. That's mainly why I made the decision to delete as requested. For the record, rest assured had this issue been any more involved I would have asked for your advice and guidance in handling it.--Cobalt327 07:38, 18 September 2012 (MDT)

Wiki bugs
Jon ...  I have noticed on some edits I make to articles, there seems to be some parts of the articles that disappear without me doing it.  Recent edit on "Thermostats Explained" as an example. I removed some words in ALL CAPS. A few days later I notice the listing tags at the bottom of the page had disappeared. The tags that would place the article in "good article" list and the "cooling" tag for that list, both had disappeared.

Helena has called for any bugs on the Hotrodders forum to be posted so they can be addressed, and so far I have avoided asking much about the CC wiki's problems/fixes. I was wondering at what point should I ask about the wiki, or are you (hopefully) handling this personally?--Cobalt327 07:38, 18 September 2012 (MDT)

:Helena has been provided with a list of the Hotrodders.com bugs, and a link to the list of wiki bugs. I think we should get the HR bugs handled first, and then try to prioritize the wiki bugs.--Jon 20:04, 18 September 2012 (MDT)

Jon... that is the edit that caught my eye on the disappearing category tags. I would not remove the tags from an article unless it was an obvious item that needed attention. I went back later and corrected(I thought) the article till I saw cobalt327 added back another category tag

Since 11-17-12 there has been a relatively large number of new user accounts created. Googling the various screen names shows many to be randomly joining many different forums. Maybe spambots? Jon, I appreciate your article on keeping your stove bolt in your hotrod! I purchased a 1948 chevy fleetmaster last fall. I drove it home and it is original except the orange paint. It needs some body work but it is not bad at all. I have been strugglin back and forth with keepin the stove bolt 216 or swappin out with a small block. I have wrestled with it because I plan to make this an everyday driver. It was this week infact that I decided I wanted to keep the stove bolt but It needs the babbit bearings replace and I hope to do that this winter. I need advice on how to go about it. I am working out of my garage on my home so this is a shade tree machanic here. No lifts or all the goodies found in a speed shop. I also want to go to double or triple carbs and dual exhaust. I agree this is a cool way to go but my only concern is right now is 55 mph seems to be the max this old girl wants to put out.

Huge increase in new user spam
:OK, thanks, I fixed it. That link color is for links to pages for which there is no content. When a new category is created, if there's no text on the category page, links to it will show in that color. I added "Driveshaft articles." to that page, so now the link is the correct color.--Jon 15:52, 29 January 2012 (MST)
+
I was concerned this might happen. Fortunately they seem to have one common IP address...--Cobalt327 19:43, 19 April 2013 (MDT)
::Jon, I thought when I finished the "Driveshaft measurements" page that it was linking to the new "Driveshaft" category correctly- I added "Category:Driveshaft" inside two brackets to the page to link it to the title page. Did I not do this correctly? I clicked on "Driveshaft" before I logged out and it was showing the "Driveshaft measurements" page then... unless that was due to what you did.
+
:Spam continuing. Not from just one or two IPs anymore, they're now coming from many IPs. Blocking the user names and all the IPs is becoming a bit of a problem.--Cobalt327 16:56, 28 April 2013 (MDT).
:::It's tricky with categories. On the wiki, you can create a link to a page by enclosing a word in double brackets. If the page already exists, the bracketed word gets turned into a link to the page, in blue link color, like this: Rust. If the page does not already exist, the bracketed word gets turned into a link to a blank page, in red color, like this: How to change your blinker fluid. You can click on the red link, and start editing a page from there (some people use this method to start a new article). For example, you can click on your username in red text on this page, and start making your user page. Now, when you start a new category, even if you put pages in the category, the category page itself is blank, so the link shows as red. So, you have to add any text to the category page, like: "Driveshaft articles." However, the category will still work fine, even if it's a red-link. Here's another example of a page with a bunch of red, undeveloped links: Quadrajet.--Jon 11:10, 30 January 2012 (MST)

Spam
BTW- Would it be better to add new responses to this page at the top so it would be the first seen, or continue to add to the bottom, or does this page get refreshed every so often?
+
On a daily basis I have been removing a large amount of spam and blocking the users. I took a short break (approximately 60 hours) from deleting the spam here at the CC wiki, when I came back there were over 200 deletions and an additional 180 users to be blocked that needed to be done. This took several hours. Since I am not in a position to implement any procedures to prevent spam from entering the wiki, I am requesting that something more be done to prevent it as my time is better spent on other pursuits (both here and elsewhere).--Cobalt327 20:36, 22 November 2013 (MST)

::Even a way to expedite the blocking of users where more than one at a time could be processed would be a big help. Same for deleting pages, although either or both may be impractical if not impossible to do from a programming/software standpoint. Had nearly 500 deletions and 350 blocked users to process on 12-02-13 after returning from a short break from the wiki- and there's still nearly 14 hours left in the day (EST here).--Cobalt327 08:34, 2 December 2013 (MST)

Is it possible to upload photos from my gallery at Hotrodders to the 'Upload file' page or does it have to come from my computer?

Is using the 'Upload file' page the best/only way to get a photo into a CC Wiki article? I still struggle w/the formatting...

Kudos to Crosley for dealing w/all the BS that finds its way on to the Wiki. Never knew how much of it there was.

:No, you currently can't upload directly from the gallery at Hotrodders.com. Of course, you can always download an image directly from the gallery to your computer (right-click on image, then choose "download file" or something like that), then upload from there. The image formatting is more complex, yes, but much more powerful. After a few dozen images or so, it becomes second nature. Be sure to check out the Image help section for details if you haven't already.--Jon 11:03, 30 January 2012 (MST)
