[edit] Pre-1980 VIN Identification

[edit] does not work with toys only automobiles

In 1980 Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) were standardized using a seventeen digit system. Prior to 1980, manufacturers used VINs unique to their own company. Understanding these codes can be very helpful, but decoding them can be difficult. The purpose of this page is to list resources to aid in identifying these codes.

These are online decoders where you enter your VIN and it shows the information pertinent to that VIN.

  1. HotRod VIN Decoder (1965 - 1973 only) AMC Buick Chevy Oldsmobile Pontiac and Mopar muscle car decoder. They say they are working on Ford.
  2. Old Car Facts Provides basic (year, make, model, body style) decoding for 46 different makes, including most US domestic VINs after 1946, and most major import VINs after 1965. Has only partial support for 1963-1967 Jeep trucks and 1975-1977 Toyota.
  3. VIN wiz Decodes most 1950-1980 US car and truck VIN's (GM/Ford/Mopar/AMC/Jeep/IHC).
  4. DecodeThis Says it is a classic and modern car VIN number decoder. It worked great with 1981 and up VIN's but may be unable to decode older VIN's.

  1. Early Ford Serial Numbers For Fords manufactured for the USA market from 1932-1953.
  2. FORD Truck VIN# Identification Decoder covering years 1970 through 1980. 100 through 350 Series including Bronco. It includes a decoder covering transmissions and front and rear axles.
  3. Ford Trucks VIN Decoder Covers Ford pickups 1951-1980. Now it also covers the 1981 and up seventeen digit numbers. This is a good one for Ford pickups.
  4. Ford and Mustang Decoder This decoder will work on 1965-1973 Mustangs and 1960-1969 Fords.
  5. The Classic Ford A site covering much useful information about classic Fords. Currently covering 1946 to 1965 cars. Click on the year of car you are interested in on the left side of the page. A link to the VIN information is located at the bottom of each year's page.
  6. The 1964½-1973 Mustang VIN Decoder Page It shows you where to locate your VIN and how to read the number. Then, you click on the year of your Mustang and it takes you to a page with that year's information.

  7. Chevy Pickup Decoder 1 Chevy Pickup Decoder 2 American Classic Truck Parts Chevrolet pickup decoder. Appears to cover 1946-1972 Chevy pickups. (Needs further testing.)
  8. Decoding Chevy VIN, Trim Tag and Drivetrain Codes Very good. Leans toward Camaro information but there is much valuable information on many Chevy components.

  1. VW VIN Decoder For those with a 9 or 10-digit VIN (chassis number) built after 1965 but before 1980. The information encoded in the VIN is limited to year and body type. It should also work for most VW cars with a 17 digit VIN code (built after 1980).
