Naturally, maintaining the [../programmes/short-learning/finance-for-managers financial records] of a company is an important part of its operations. Bookkeeping courses provide a lot more than just simple guidelines for entering transactions into the books.

In the early days of bookkeeping, this was the way it was done: Financial transactions were recorded in books of original entries, or journals. Later, to make sure that all the transactions were recorded successfully a bookkeeper would have to prepare a trial balance.

With the development of modern technology and with the improvement of accounting programs, businesses are moving away from entering transactions by hand into journals and rely on sophisticated programs to assist with calculations and checking entries.

This means a bookkeeper has to update their skills in order to keep themselves employable or to improve their earning potential. The software used in bookkeeping doesn’t mean that someone still shouldn’t check the entries. In other words, a good course should cover both sides of bookkeeping, the basics of bookkeeping and the new, computer-based side.

At The Business School, we provide tuition support for ICB Bookkeeping to Trial Balance programme. This programme is 10 weeks long and is internationally recognised by the ICB. It looks at subjects like basic business, bookkeeping and accounting, value added tax, source documents, inventory systems, individual accounts for creditors and debtors as well as many other skills.

Additionally, we also provide tuition support for a Computerised Bookkeeping programme. This programme is 12 weeks long, internationally recognised by the ICB and looks at the subjects such as basic computer concepts, working with Microsoft Windows®, the internet and Microsoft Outlook® and other programmes as well as completing the monthly bookkeeping cycle using such software and a computerised accounting package.

The Business School is part of Varsity College, an educational brand of The IIE, which is registered as a Private Higher Education Institution with the Department of Education under the Higher Education Act 1997. The IIE is South Africa’s largest independent provider of tertiary education.

If you’re interested in this programme, or any other programme please contact us at The Business School at Varsity College, or go to [../ www.thebusinessschool.co.za].
