Google Co-founder Larry Page doesn’t mind taking risky bets on new technologies. As the C.E.O. of Alphabet, cheap jordan shoes, the Google parent company that houses the tech giant’s more ambitious “moonshot” projects, like self-driving cars and futuristic smart contact lenses, Page believes “you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant.” But at least one moonshot was so audacious that Page has been funding it himself: flying cars. According to a new Bloomberg report, Page has quietly spent more than $100 million to oversee the development of the futuristic form of transportation.

Page’s involvement in flying-car projects has been kept intentionally secretive. According to Bloomberg, he owns a start-up called Zee.Aero, which launched six years ago. He’s spent $100 million of his own money on Zee.Aero, which is conveniently located in Mountain View, a stone’s throw from Google’s own headquarters. When Zee.Aero launched, Bloomberg reports, cheap retro jordans, employees were restricted to the first floor of the company’s two-floor building. On the second floor was Page’s multi-billionaire man-cave, consisting of, among other things, yourcellan, a climbing wall, paintings, and a SpaceX rocket engine, cheap real jordans, given to him by friend Elon Musk. Zee.Aero employees didn’t know who their funder was, but suspected he must be very wealthy. He was referred to as GUS, the guy upstairs. Soon enough, Zee.Aero ran out of room on the first floor, and Page’s man-cave was dismantled to make room. Zee.Aero has two prototype aircraft in a hangar not far from its headquarters. The electric vehicles take “regular test flights,” according to Bloomberg. In a patent filed four years ago, the company says Zee.Aero’s aircraft has vertical takeoff and landing capability.

But Zee.Aero isn’t Page’s only endeavor: he’s also funding another flying-car start-up called Kitty Hawk, which competes directly with Zee.Aero and has offices a half-mile away their headquarters. Sebastian Thrun,, who is responsible for much of Google’s self-driving car project, is the company’s president, according to filings. Bloomberg says Kitty Hawk’s aircraft “resembles a giant version of a quadcopter drone.”

Even more mysterious is what Page is hoping to accomplish with both aeronautics companies. Will the 43-year-old’s flying cars remain a billionaire’s pipe dream or actual play toy? Or does the Alphabet C.E.O. dream of a universe in which problems like gridlock and pollution are eliminated by personal electric aircraft? For a man who has diverted millions into radical life extension biotechnology and wants to build his own futuristic, tech-based city, the sky’s the limit.
Full ScreenPhotos:1 23Photos from the 2016 Breakthrough Prize Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla ChanPhoto: Photograph by Justin Bishop.PreviousNextMark Zuckerberg and Priscilla ChanPhotograph by Justin Bishop.Kate Hudson and Brian Grazer.Photograph by Justin Bishop.Martin Starr and Kumail Nanjiani.Photograph by Justin Bishop.Russell CrowePhotograph by Justin Bishop.Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams.
