A major incident has been avoided, Mr. Kumar said. He said though it was too early to know the cause of the fire, the traders burnt heaps of rubbish near their shops, and there might be a possibility that a spark would have caught onto something and caused the flare. This is the third incident of fire in the district this week, following a major flare in a similarly congested Valiyangadi and a second one at Elathur.

Green Park waiting to happen at other city markets

NEW DELHI: Thirty three year old filmmaker Anand Bhaskar Morla, sac longchamps, who was electrocuted in Green Park market on Saturday, was a victim of civic apathy. Had the South Delhi Municipal Corporation checked the rampant encroachments, this could have been prevented. Though the civic agencies claim they conduct routine drives against encroachments and earn close to Rs 8 crore annually as penalties, the situation on ground is only worsening.

In upscale VasantVihar's D Block market, electric cables dangle dangerously low. Some are drawing power illegally.

At the Munirka market,tn requin pas cher homme, the main road outside the shops has been reduced to almost half its original size as the shops have spilled over. You can't take your eyes off the tangled wires overhead which drop down at times; and to think that the entire area gets flooded when it rains. Green Park could be repeated here.

In Chittaranjan Park's Market No.1, almost all shops have extended their counters and covered the common passage. In this small market which has close to 30 shops, longchamps, many of them eateries, food is cooked in open and the corridors have gas cylinders and stoves. The situation is the same in Market No. 2. Goods are stacked right under the main electricity meter boxes. There is need for stringent action,'' said KeshavAggarwal, a resident.

Traders find nothing wrong in stocking goods outside their shops at all markets. "A tragedy is waiting to happen here. We have made several requests to the civic agency to improve the condition of the market, but our requests have gone unheard,'' said a trader, Ashok.

The civic agencies claim that they don't have enough powers to prosecute the violators. Section 360 of DMC Act, which empowers them to take action against encroachments, is toothless, they say. "We can impose a penalty of just Rs 200 in case of encroachments and that's nothing for these traders. There is a need to increase the penalty.
