Believe it or not, there was a time in American history―a very long time, yourcellan, in fact―when presidential candidates didn’t even deign to attend the national conventions that nominated them. Legend has it that Abraham Lincoln was running errands for his wife, or chatting with friends in a newspaper office in Springfield, Illinois, when he learned that delegates meeting at the Wigwam in Chicago had made him the G.O.P.’s first standard-bearer, in 1860. Not until 1932 did a Democratic nominee appear at a convention to accept the nomination in person, and that’s only because Franklin Delano Roosevelt flew from New York to Chicago to prove that his infantile paralysis would not be debilitating. In 1940,cheap jordans for sale, Wendell Willkie became the first Republican nominee to address his convention, in an impromptu appearance in Philadelphia (and he still went through the ritual of formally accepting the nomination two months later at a rally that drew some 200,000 people to his hometown of Elwood, Indiana). I sometimes wonder if we wouldn’t all be better off reverting to the candidates’ past practice and just watching conventions from afar. In so many ways, the worst place to cover a modern political convention is at the convention itself. Forget the logistical hassles, the crowds, and the ever-widening security perimeter that makes it so often impossible to do old-fashioned reporting by walking around. The whole show has long since been produced solely for television―and now, especially, for the Internet and social media―and the best, and in many ways most accurate, view of the proceedings is really from a screen at home. Gone are the days when delegates could take 103 horse-trading ballots to settle on a nominee―as the Democrats did when they chose John W. Davis in New York City in 1924―and Will Rogers could write, “The real nomination is taking place in a room at some hotel with less than six men present.” No longer do procedural wrangling and bitter floor fights force a nominee to deliver an
Melania alone, exposed and unsupported, to deal with the embarrassments he’s caused her throughout the campaign. He barely addressed the R.N.C. speech controversy, beyond tweeting out her statement and his campaign’s statement afterward. When questions about her immigration status were raised in the press, he promised that they would hold a press conference to address the issue. That press conference never happened. Melania herself has stood up for herself when it was reported that she had allegedly served as an escort, suing the Daily Mail and threatening a number of publications if they did not issue retractions and apologies. It very well may be that Melania wants it this way. As she told Cooper, “I’m great. I’m very strong. I’m very confident and I live my life. I take care of myself.” And good on her for wanting to set the record straight on her own terms. It rings strange, though, cheap jordans free shipping, that in order to show Donald’s softer side following the sexual-assault allegations, his wife has to appear without him. Melania made it very clear that she’s capable of dealing with this. “I’m very strong. People, they don’t really know me. People think and talk about me, the—like, ‘Oh,cheap real jordans, Melania, oh, poor Melania.’ Dont feel sorry for me. Dont feel sorry for me.” I still did, though, feel sorry. It’s hard to watch a woman do this on national television, blaming the media and the opposition and Billy Bush and Access Hollywood for her husband’s words and whatever pain this has caused her. It’s difficult to listen to her flip-flopping around under an unwanted spotlight, senselessly darting from defending her husband’s taped words because he sometimes acts like a teenage boy to defending his ability to tweet because he’s an adult. It’s not easy to see someone humiliated, even if they themselves don’t believe the allegations are true. I stopped feeling sorry, though, cheap jordans, when Cooper asked Melania if the behavior Donald described on the tape—grabbing a woman without consent because he was a “star”—would
