Former UMN student’s sexual harassment case goes to trial A former University of Minnesota Ph.D. student goes to court Monday to recover lost wages from a career she says she abandoned because of a supervisor’s sexual overtures. Stephanie Jenkins is suing the supervisor, U.S. Fish and Wildlife scientist Ted Swem, cheapretrojordansreal< a>, for sexual harassment and suing the university for creating a hostile work environment. Jenkins was 29 in 2011 when she was accepted as a student and research assistant. Her work required two 17-day rafting trips with the 56-year-old Swem, studying falcons along Alaska’s uninhabited Colville River. “Almost immediately, cheap real jordans< a>, Swem began telling sexually explicit jokes, asking Jenkins intrusive questions about her dating life, and recounting his prior sexual encounters with women, cheap jordans online< a>,” Jenkins’ lawyers wrote in a trial brief. Swem persisted with his advances throughout the trip despite Jenkins’ refusals, she said. Jenkins returned to Alaska later that year for a second trip with Swem, jordans for cheap< a>, this time accompanied by her academic adviser,< a>, David Andersen. She said Swem did not bother her during the week that Andersen was present but harassed her again once?Andersen left. Jenkins did not report the harassment to the university until November, after?she and Swem were assigned a shared office on the Twin Cities campus and he kept inviting her on social outings. According to the university’s court filings,< a>, Andersen found Jenkins a separate office and made sure she wouldn’t have to work with Swem without supervision. Jenkins was unsatisfied with the arrangement and sought help, first from a university ombudsman and then its Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action office. Jenkins says Andersen refused to agree to “alternative working situations” and looked into firing her. The university says Jenkins was failing to make academic progress. In January 2012, a year after she joined the university, Jenkins?abruptly quit. “Understanding that she would have no option but to work with Swem, and with her mental health and academic career in jeopardy, Jenkins felt she had no other choice but to resign” from the university, her lawyers wrote.Related Articles The U says that Swem never sexually harassed Jenkins after she reported it to Andersen and that the U “promptly remedied the alleged harassment.” Swem in a trial brief said his actions did not constitute sexual harassment. Also at issue is whether Swem is a university employee entitled to the U’s legal defense and indemnification resources. The judge previously dismissed Jenkins’ legal claim against Andersen, finding that her adviser did not act with “deliberate indifference” to her complaints. The trial in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis is expected to take at least a?week. View more on TwinCities Outbrain>
