== Adjusting front Drum brakes, ==

== The Front Drums on older cars, ===> had no self adjust, they handled 60-70% of the load, and if not equal would cause car to lurch to the R or L, actually able to rip steering wheel out of your hands! I made a crappy picture of the parts to deal with the oval at the bottom is supposed to be the slot in the rear (backing plate) the ONLY access with the drum on. The wheel as seen through the slot rises and lowers, direction is near impossible to determine. with the tool (handle)up, business end at bottom of wheel teeth, as the handle goes down the wheel spins UP (CW), This is tighten, In my pathetic illustration, the two horiz. lines are the screw and the place it WOULD be if this was the front brake. The flat on the spring is stretched against the star wheel teeth locking it, A slim tool is inserted through the slot and the spring is lifted away from the teeth, then the spoon is wedged into the teeth at the bottom (handle up, And the wheel is spun upward as the handle is lowered. The wheel is of course off the ground, Tighten until a drag is felt while rotating the tire (wheel)Then back 5 clicks, remember the whole works expand with heat SO DON"T OVER TIGHTEN! you'll get 2 gallons a mile, and your new tires will last a day!(assuming you stop in one direction and don't fling sideways into the Concrete barrior!)Seriously, Drive a couple block and EASY 1st time try brakes, easy pedal easy "fling to side", if not even. If they feel evenly applied, brake roughly for a short bit then get out and Smell, look,&feel, Slowly with back of hand, If they are too tight, you will feel the  heet without touching the metal!!!!!! Warm, Even real warm is normal. if warm and straight stop, you are golden! If you are a bit anal, (why not its your hot rod!) Jack front again, a good hand spin should carry tire 3 rotations then stop. Perfect not too tight while hot , not too loose to stop, and you are still the one that steers! The power assist oversized drums on my 68 GTO are remarkable when setup! They feel great and never squeal or get friction dust all over the chrome Cragar S/S wheels, ( a 68 has to have Cragar S/S) right?
