==Transfering ownership== ===The transfer of ownership document, or title=== Many, if not all, provinces and states have a section on the back of the registration or title one must fill out and give to the new owner when selling the car. Fill out all the information. '''Make a photocopy of the transfer of ownership for yourself.''' ===The bill of sale=== In addition to the transfer of ownership document, you should create a bill of sale. On a blank piece of paper, include: *The date *"Sold to:" *Buyer's name *Year, make and model of vehicle *The vehicle's serial number *The dollar amount for which the vehicle is being sold *"Vehicle is sold as is, where is" *"Vehicle is free of liens or encumberances" *Your signature, your printed name, your full address *Buyer's signature, buyer's printed name, buyer's full address *Witness signature, Witness printed signature *Have your bill of sale notarized no matter what state in which you live *Make a photocopy of the bill of sale for your records *Make a photocopy of the transfer of ownership for yourself. ===Proving "disownership"=== Keep your copies of the transfer of ownership and of the bill of sale in your filing cabinet. You must be able to prove that the vehicle does not belong to you should the buyer choose not to register the vehicle and it ends up abandoned in a compound somewhere. You could be held liable for storage charges. After a given period, if the new owner did not register the vehicle, you may want to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to "junk" the title in order to end any association between you and the vehicle.
