John the Revelator, inspired by Christ, tells us that the Great Whore is not simply any whore, however is Jerusalem that great city (Rev 11:8)! Simply like when John is influenced to compose Jerusalem as Sodom and Egypt. It is the ideology the Jews brought back with them from old Babylon and became idolatrous by replacing exactly what God had offered them with their oral traditions that Jesus often tore on them for. Jesus continues in Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem (not Israel they were dispersed amongst the Gentiles and no longer a people, though part of them would repent in Judah), that kills the prophets, and stones them that are sent out unto her! He forecasted her house would be desolate-in various other words, no even more House of Judah (Jews) to have unique condition with Yahweh God! Jerusalem is also called a "Whore" or "Harlot" in several instances in the OT. The word "Whore" can also be equated as "Idolatress". Jerusalem the harlot, adulterous wife, former husband Yahweh's other half of harlotry, the land dedicates terrific harlotry, they have actually left their God to play the harlot, we review throughout the OT. This just makes sense too, since just a people Yahweh God had been wed to could be described as "a Great Harlot (Rev 17:1) and "Mother of Harlots (Rev 17:5)." Even a people that reside in a most despicable way would not be described in this magnitude of unfaithfulness, unless they had actually defiled a relationship with God Himself e.g. Isa 54:5 a "For thy Maker is thy husband ...". Many prior to Israel had actually dedicated acts of extramarital relations, fornication, adultery, and so on as we discover this in OT passages we've mentioned, but would not fit this description unless they had done the supreme abomination by breaking their covenant with God Himself and eliminating the Christ. The descriptions in bold "terrific and mother of harlots" singles Jerusalem out among all whores. It's also intriguing that lots of expressions in the Bible are the same we use today, e.g. the mother of all wicked. In the coming passage in Jeremiah notice the extra focus God applies "the House of Judah's (Jews - 2 southern tribes)" unfaithfulness toward Him, in contrast to "the House of Israel (10 northern tribes non-Jews that were not around and no longer a people of God Hos 1:9 et al)". Compare the following statement, to how He reveals favor towards "Israel's 10 northern tribes", since God stayed married to "Judah" and Judah had actually witnessed "Israel's" penalty and still continued with her treacherous ways of idolatry and whoredom:. And I saw, when for all the causes wherein backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and offered her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but played the harlot and went. 11 And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel has justified herself more than treacherous Judah. Christ's Parousia, the First Resurrection, the Judgment [destruction of the harlot Jerusalem of old Jer 3:1 -8 'Jeremiah in fact utilizes the word HARLOT when explaining Jerusalem', Rev 18:7, 24 this harlot was she who got rid of the prophets as Jesus said; likewise we have in Isa 1:21 How is the faithful city become a harlot! she that was full of justice! righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.], her destruction and the inauguration of Christ's Kingdom were all concurrent occasions [Heb 8:13, 2Tm 4:1, Mt 16:27 -28], when one happened they all took place within close distance ... Mal 2:11 -12 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of Jehovah which he loves, and hath married the daughter of a foreign god. Jehovah will cut off, to the man that doeth this, him that wakes and him that answers, from the tents of Jacob, and him that provides an offering unto Jehovah of hosts. In this chapter Jerusalem (the capital of the southern kingdom) and Samaria (the capital of the northern kingdom) are envisioned as harlot sisters of one mother (the nation of Israel). This is paralleled in Revelation where harlot Babylon is said to be drunk of the blood of the martyrs and saints (Rev. 17:6), and that she is guilty of all the righteous bloodshed on the Land (Rev. 18:24). This is the exact same bloodguilt that Jesus announced against the leaders of Jerusalem in Matthew 23:29 -37. "And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness: and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in scarlet and purple, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations, even the unclean things of her fornication, and upon her forehead a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with a great wonder."(Rev 17:3). This Harlot of all Harlots made political allies with the world (Rome), and had actually rebelled to the point of eliminating her husband and refused to recognize it. She asserted she was not a widow, "... I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall in no wise see mourning," clung to the law and refused to be launched from the law. She disliked the image of God in the flesh (Jesus Christ), hated the things He had to say, disliked exactly what He stood for and disliked His saints that represented Him, viz. "drunken with the blood of the saints." She therefore, in that first century context, will be (when Revelation was composed) made "... desolate and naked, and (by the Roman armies circa AD67) shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her utterly with fire (Rev 17:16 b). This would be done by "the avengers for the wrath of Yahweh God to him that does evil" using His "ministers" (the Roman armies - Romans 13:4). And the female whom you saw is the terrific city (Jerusalem), which reigns over the kings of the earth (land). For her sins have actually reached even unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities ("you who kill the prophets" [Luk 11:49; Mat 23:34, 37] God sent to them, and their habits with Jesus and the Apostles revealed their true colors had actually not altered one bit, except for the worse!). Render unto her even as she rendered, and double unto her the double according to her works: in the cup which she mingled, mingle unto her double(Rev 18:5, 6, 7b; 17:18). So Jerusalem was the city and kingdom that did reign at that time, this is hard for Preterists since they want to put Jesus as ruling prior to AD70 and this alone makes their positions implausible. "The Beast Destroys the Whore: Rome Destroys Jerusalem". And the 10 horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the harlot; they will certainly make her naked and desolate, and devour her with fire. The Number of the Beast: 666 (Revelation 13). A beast with seven heads, the dragon. Who is like the beast, and who can combat against it? Only the Lamb of God. The number of the beast sixty and six-hundred six obligation worship. The Destruction of Jerusalem, the Whore: Fallen, fallen in Babylon the excellent! Come out of her my people. A queen I sit I am no widow, mourning I shall never see so shall her plagues come in a single day, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she shall be burned with fire. God announces that her lovers would turn on her and burn her with fire (vv. 35-43). This is exactly what takes place to harlot Babylon in Revelation 17-18; the beast she is dedicating whoredom with (Rome), turns on her and ruins her with fire (Rev. 17:11 -18). In Ezekiel, this mentions the sixth-century BC destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by Nebuchadnezzar. In Revelation this mentions the AD70 damage of Jerusalem and the Temple by Titus (cf. Dan. 9:26 -27). The Son of man was available in heavenly power to supplant Judaism by a better covenant, and to make the kingdoms of the world His own, which parousia dates from the fall of Jerusalem and its temple. The mourning of 'all the tribes of the land' (not all countries of the globe) was coincident with the desolation of Zion, that our Lord appropriately foretold it in language drawned from Zech. xii, 11,12" (Biblical Hermeneutics, 446-447).
