The year was 1836 and the shirt was a gift for her father,vanessa bruno soldes.<br><br>Seven year old Anna Hask of Bethlehem also was well versed in sewing and could make pleats and darn clothing.<br><br>Sewing was a necessary skill for all women in the 19th century, and the Moravians made sure women learned the skill at an early age.<br><br>"They had to know how to do plain sewing," says Rebecca Hordis, collections manager at Moravian Museum. "If anything got damaged they had to repair it. Even a small child would be able to do that."<br><br>The art of sewing both for necessity and decoration is the subject of the museum's exhibit on Sewing Plain and Fancy: Tools and Examples of the Sewing Arts, which runs through Nov. 1.<br><br>The exhibit is comprised of examples of sewing made by Moravians from the museum's 7,000 piece collection.<br><br>"We have the luxury of picking topics and doing exhibits," says Meg Sharp Walton, the museum's community relations director. "We are trying to focus on the early era. People don't think of needlework as an art form. These were everyday practical things they were making. It was an art form that people didn't recognize as art because it was necessary."<br><br>She points out even though much of the sewing was necessary,air jordan pas cher, every attention was given to details from pin cushions to lace.<br><br>"They are works of art," she says of the pieces on display. "They are absolutely beautiful."<br><br>Hordis says the work is a reflection of the times before industrialization changed the way textiles were made.<br><br>"The 19th century was a watershed era for the creations of beautiful things by hand," she says. "What ladies did if very industrious was to darn and sew while the laundry was drying. They were always repairing items."<br><br>Hordis says sewing was taught at an early age in schools.<br><br>"The Moravians believed in equal education so girls attended school," she says. "They made samplers because they didn't have pattern books and were learning stitches longer."<br><br>Many of the samplers on display include a blue church that Hordis says was a popular motif with girls in seminary.<br><br>A 19th century dress demonstrates how industrious Moravians stayed current with styles from Europe.<br><br>"If styles changed,chaussure Louboutin, she could've taken off the trim and replaced it,tn pas cher," says Hordis. "It could've been a wedding dress with different trim."<br><br>Hordis says the more ornamental sewing that included needlework and ribbonwork became popular in the 19th century,air jordan hommes.<br><br>"Sewing was a way to show your creative side," says Hordis. "It was a different social structure.
