Consider this: These heads have 170cc intake runners. As such, they will do a very good job on a 355 small block Chevy motor when used as a daily driver with a flat-top or dished piston. If a builder has high static compression ratio in mind for the build, he would be silly to use the small runner heads with domed pistons to make high-rpm horsepower because the heads will stall sooner than larger runner heads . He'd naturally choose a different head that would flow more CFM. Therefore, I see no use for domed pistons to be used with L31 heads. An excellent 9.60:1 static compression ratio 355 street motor that will operate on pump gas can be built using a 12cc dished piston and 5.7" rods..... Techinspector1

:The thing is, there are other Vortec heads than just the 170 cc intake port volume production L31 casting number's 062/906.

Does anybody know if these heads are exactly the same as the 1993 and 1994 and higher 4.3l V6 "Vortec" heads?

:In the case of the Bow Tie Vortec large port heads (225 cc before porting), they can make well over 600 HP- and in max output situations they need all the CR they can get. These heads can only be milled to about 51 cc so if any additional CR is needed, it can only come from welding the chambers or domed pistons.

All the parameters match. The valve sizes 1.94 I vs. 1.50 E, the "ski ramp" swirl on the roof of the intake, the eccentric location of the spark plug hole.

:But the main point in mentioning domed pistons at all is that a standard pop up for the earlier chambers can cause interference if used with a Vortec chamber.--Cobalt327 21:11, 3 January 2013 (MST)

I still have to cc the chambers but it starts to look like these heads are the same. Must be a reason that these engines produce 300 NM torque at only 2'800 rpm in stock trim.

As I'm in the middle of a build it would be great to have that confirmed. --Error 401 15:25, 18 February 2016 (MST)

:The 4.3L Chevy 90 degree V6 heads you're referring to are more closely related to the casting number 14102191 Swirl port SBC heads. --Cobalt327 22:27, 18 February 2016 (MST)
