If attending a Meisner summer intensive program is part of your plan for 2014, now is the time to begin the research and application process. At Maggie Flanigan Studio, we began accepting applications and arranging interviews in November. How should you go about seeking out the ideal program? NYC offers you a number of choices. Many studios charge significant amounts of money during their summer acting program to carry them through to fall classes. To make the right decision, one that will be worth your time and money, you will want to first understand your needs and ultimate goals. Think about the following: 1. Go to the Studio's Website and Look Around Do your research before you apply anywhere. Look closely at their website. A website can be a great indicator about the quality of a studio. Does the website give you a feel for the studio's mission? Does the content of the site have a clear purpose or does it seem as if they are just trying to sound falsely inspirational to draw in the unprofessional actor? Does the site spend too much time bragging about their teachers? Or does the studio seem more focused on the school as a whole? Who comes to meet with you? Does the studio require you to make a purchase before you interview? These are all potential red flags. The best program will put students first. 2. Get Out There and Visit the Studios Visiting a studio will provide you with more knowledge about the school than you could ever get online. Did the website describe the studio accurately? Were you greeted with enthusiasm? Were they anxious to provide you with any information you needed? Was the studio a welcoming, nurturing environment in which you felt comfortable? Did the space have a good aesthetic? Were they ready and willing to provide you with a tour? When you walked through the facility, could you see yourself there for a Meisner summer intensive program? 3. Ask Others in the Industry for Recommendations Seek out information from people you know and trust. Know that the schools with the flashiest marketing are often not the best choice. Personal perspectives from current and past students will allow to obtain first-hand knowledge before you even show up to your first day of class at the summer intensive program. You will want to seek out people who are committed to the same goals. A summer session cannot provide an actor with all of the skills and techniques they need. However, these sessions can still be highly valuable for both the aspiring and experienced actor. Our goal, along with providing quality acting instruction in Meisner principles, is to develop our students' love of acting. With the right Meisner summer intensive class, you could truly give your career a great boost.
