The various myths surrounding [http://www.chubb.co.za/blog/debunking-5-misconceptions-surrounding-biometric-access-control/ biometric access control] have mislead businesses, making them apprehensive about installing these security systems. So, we've drawn up list of myths that needed debunking. Here are five of the most common misconceptions surrounding biometrics: Myth 1: Biometrics are a new concept The technology may be new, but the concept of biometrics isn't. The principle of recognising people according to individual traits and characteristics has been around since the building of the pyramids. Egyptian workers were identified by their physical size, facial features, complexion and scars. Myth 2: Key and card access is much more effective Using key and card access control does have its merits, but using biometrics for access control is much quicker and more reliable. It also uses distinctive personal features and characteristics to identify you, which reduces admin. Myth 3: Biometrics don't pick up children's fingerprints This may have been a problem in the past, but today's advanced systems have fingerprint imaging with much higher resolutions, making it easier for the system to read characteristics. In 2007, it was estimated that 3 500 UK schools used fingerprint scanning to replace library cards and for access control, proving children's fingerprints work on these systems. Myth 4: Biometrics are expensive The cost of a biometric system is all dependant on the type of system and the scale of the system. For example, an iris scanner is more expensive than a fingerprint scanner. A system containing ten scanners will also cost a lot more than a system that only has two scanners. Different brands will also affect cost. Myth 5: Anyone can set up and work a biometric system. There are many external factors that play a part in how and where a biometric system should be installed. You'll need to consider factors such as lighting conditions, the number of users, the characteristics of the users and what type of environment the system will be in. At Chubb Fire and Security, we offer a free security assessment to help determine how many biometric units you'll need and where they should be placed. We'll also install your entire biometric access control system for you.
