Hatch Patch, Hatch Elementary's school garden that occupies more than 900 square feet on the north side of the school, cheap jordans, celebrated its 10th harvest this fall. (Heather Guido Handout) "Each year, the garden has just gotten a little bit bigger and a little bit bigger," said Heather Guido, current Hatch Patch leader who took over three years ago. They've seen butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and have even spotted a hawk, Guido said. In the Hatch orchard, cherries, plums,, pears, nectarines, peaches and apples grow. "You feel like you're in this magical space," Guido said. "It just gives the kids a place that's beautiful and inviting." Guido said it's important that the garden be tied to curriculum, as it allows children to utilize math and science, geography and more. In art, kindergarteners try printmaking using vegetables; fourth-graders do observational drawings in the garden. Children grew winter wheat and used a hand-powered mill to grind it into flour, Guido said. They've focused on Illinois crops, growing soybeans, cheap retro jordans, popcorn and horseradish "Every child plants in the spring, and every child harvests in the fall," Guido said. A portion of the garden's bounty each fall is donated to the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry. This year, more than 100 pounds was given, Guido said. The remainder is used for a dinner celebrating the Hatch Patch's harvest. The first year, the dinner was hosted in the cafeteria. This year, more than 500 people attended on a late summer night, cheap jordan shoes, and tables topped with white linen filled the blacktop outside the school. Local restaurants, staff and parents take the produce from the garden and turn it into eggplant ratatouille, potato gratin, plum chutney and more. Guido is quick to mention the garden is a community effort, from parents who volunteer their time tending to the garden to artist parents whose work can be found in the space. Since Hatch is the smallest elementary school, Guido said, "the Hatch Patch sort of ties us together, cheap air jordans, and the tradition of the Hatch Patch dinner is a huge community builder." Noel said the garden offers children a wonderful education in where food comes from. Students enjoy weeding, spotting worms, hearing cardinals and being closer to nature. "They became stewards of the garden and became really connected, and that's what I think is really important," she said. Knickrehm said she hopes the garden continues to grow, and she looks forward to seeing what the students want to plant this year. "It's really grown into this beautiful thing that's become part of the identity of the school, and I love that, retro new jordans," Knickrehm said.
