I disconnect the ground wire and put put a voltage meter between the ground terminal and the battery, this will show voltage only when there is a draw. The next step is remove fuses until the meter goes to 0, when it does you have found the branch that is causing the problem. That branch should be noted and the fuse replaced, the meter will show voltage again and parts of the circuit disconnected until the voltage drops again. When it does that should be your problem area, bad switch, corroded light socket, bare wire or some area of damage that should be obvious.
