Choosing a steering column

Ok, so I've got my Chassis Eng. Must II front on my chev, and am not sure what column to use. I have access to some metric gm columns, but have mostly seen van units from the 70's used. Any suggestions? Is it better to use short blockhugger headers to gain clearance for the linkage or just any headers?
